Product Description
This ring is based on a strike slip fault. Faults, where two blocks of rock move relative to one another, arise from the motion of the earth's crust and upper mantle (plate tectonics). Faults are are classified by the direction of the movement of block against block. With a strike slip fault, the plane of the fault is mostly vertical with respect to the earth's crust and the motion of the rocks is horizontal. The San Andreas fault, located along the western coast of the United States, is an example of a strike-slip fault. Earthquakes, which are common along the San Andreas fault, are caused when the plates of an active fault move rapidly and release energy.
Ring shown was printed in polished bronze. The earth's surface is depicted on the top of the ring and the rock strata are represented on the side of the ring.
