Print your own 1:500 scale set of 3 SKA radio telescope dish antennae - part of the world's largest radio telescope!
These 3D prints were produced for an interactive model of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA)’s twin telescope sites in a partnership between the SKA’s Communications and Outreach Team, and the Arts University Bournemouth's BA (Hons) Modelmaking degree course.
The model was designed to demonstrate the enormous data-generating power of the SKA, the world's largest radio telescope. Phase 1 of construction of the SKA will see around 200 of these dish antennae in South Africa and 130,000 low-frequency antennae in Australia.
The SKA is a global science project with over 270 contributing organisations from over 20 countries involved, representing more than 1,000 scientists, engineers, project managers and policy makers. The SKA will be able to conduct transformational science, breaking new ground in astronomical observations.
Made of steel, the real SKA dishes stand at 18m tall and weigh 45 tonnes. Behind them is a team of scientists, engineers and manufacturers in Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, the UK and South Africa – all part of an international consortium designing, manufacturing, testing and refining optics, structures and instruments for the dishes.
