This model is a conjectural reconstruction of a four wheel passenger car used by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad c. 1836. No technical drawings or measurements of this car exist today. However two of these four wheel cars are depicted in the painting "
Scene of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal at Harpers Ferry" made by George Harvey, c. 1837. Details and dimensions for the model were taken from a drawing of an eight wheeled B&O coach that was printed in a French publication in 1841, and other dimensions were taken from measurements of four-wheel boxcars in use by the B&O in the 1840s.
To complete this model, the following materials/items are needed:
- two pairs of 33" (9.5mm) HO scale wheels on standard 26mm pinpoint axles.
- a length of 24 or 25 gauge wire to form the handrails and window framing
- two 1.5M self-tapping screws of 3 to 6mm length (to secure the coach body to the frame)
Additional details such as brake levers, window shades and window glazing may be added at the modeller's discretion.
As printed the coach body is attached to the frame by several sprues. These must be removed. two bottom corners of the coach body are provided with tabs to facilitate mounting the body to the frame by means of self-tapping screws (not included). Additionally, within the coach is printed a pattern intended to be used to check the dimensions of the hand railings, to ensure uniformity when these are bent from wire.
To meet Shapeways guidelines on material thickness, some excess material is printed around the framehorns and axle boxes, this may be trimmed off by the modeller at their discretion.
