Tears of Myrrha

The wife of king Cinira boasted that her daughter Myrrha was more beautiful than the goddess Aphrodite. The goddess revenged herself for the insult, making her fall in love with her father. While she was trying to hang herself, Myrrha was rescued thanks to the intervention of the nurse that helped her to join with her father. After consuming the incest, pushed by the shame, Myrrha ran away desperate in the wood. Aphrodite, moved to pity, transformed her into a tree of myrrh, whose drops of perfumed resin remember her painful tears. After nine months from the plant was born Adonis.
