Destroyers are the workhorses of most fleets, being large enough to be versatile, but small enough to be built in large numbers. Some less well funded fleets even use destroyers as makeshift capital vessels. Destroyers can be found everywhere, doing basically any mission imaginable, and as such civilian encounters with military vessels will rarely be anything other than a destroyer.

Long Gun Destroyers were an experiment at increasing the vessels firepower and range. The hope was to turn destroyers into useful light capital ships. Although the 200-millimeter railguns only added ten tons to the vessel’s total mass, they doubled the energy draw, and obviously halved rate of fire. In the end, the loss of point defense saturation outweighed the single round damage ability, and solutions to the power draw problem either substantially increased mass, or negatively effected the vessels other capabilities. In the end, all of the testbed vessels were converted back to the standard class.
