Developed in the 2280s, the Kroixus class was designed to counter the increasing numbers of Klingon warships on the Romulan border, by building a light cruiser with an unusually heavy armament for the size, with three torpedo launchers, one of which modified to fire the new plasma torpedoes tested in the previous decades, four heavy disruptors and two light ones. A number of the systems were redundant in case the main ones were damaged or destroyed in battle, and that led to a large crew for the size of the vessel.
The class was upgraded multiple times and remained in service until the 2360s, although after the Dominion War of the 2380s the remaining ships were retired from service.
