Product Description
Mount Rushmore is an incredible mix of art and engineering. You really can't appreciate it until you see it in person.
It isn't just four presidents in a row on top of a mountain face. They actually rest at various angles and depths on the mountain. This becomes obvious when you drive up Highway 16 as it approaches it and weaves past it.

I decided to create a version of Mount Rushmore that is more faithful to the spatial mass and form. I used all the photos I could find to model it plus using some screen captures from Apple Maps to help render more of the overall mass of the mountain around the faces. I wanted my model to place the faces in the context that they are a smaller part of the mass of Mount Rushmore, in spite of their impressive size.

In this model, you can truly appreciate just how far back into the mountain the faces were actually carved. While Washington was carved just behind the original surface of the top of Mount Rushmore, fissures and bad rock forced Gutzon Borglum to blast deeper into the mountain face to find suitable rock for Jefferson and Lincoln. Roosevelt ended up being carved even farther back. As a result, the presidents on Mount Rushmore are in more of an arc going back into the mountain instead of being in a cluster as Borglum had first planned. Borglum created and designed the monument, but the mountain dictated the final outcome.

You can see the enormous talus pile at the base of the mountain. The fissured and rough shape of the mountain is rendered around the faces. You can see the start of Washington's lapels, the roughed out edges that would have been Jefferson's left hand and the collar and start of Lincoln's left hand below his face. The monument is only partially finished according to Borglum's design. However, it is universally agreed that it is perfect as it is now.
