Product Description
"Marcel unbottened his jacket. He sat back down. He pulled the mask over his head and moaned as a whale might moan were it about to upchuck some ambergris."

Tom Robbins, 'Jitterbug Perfume' Bantam Dell, New York, 1984, p. 13.

(–)-Ambrox is the principal odorant of ambergris, a precious ancient perfumery material that had also been used as medicine, condiment and aphrodisiac ('Scent and Chemistry – The Molecular World of Odors', Verlag Helvetica Chimica Acta/Wiley-VCH, 2012, p. 364). Like cows, the sperm whale that feeds on giant squids and octupuses is a ruminant animal, and has four stomachs. Indigestible material such as sharp squids beaks and pens accumulates in the first stomach, and is vomited into the ocean every now and then. Yet, if the whale falls sick, nondigested mass passes through each of the four cavernous stomachs into the intestines, where it causes lesions that are covered with ambergris. When the mechanical injuries have healed, the ambergris chunks are usually excreeted but if they grew too large they can even cause fatal intestinal rupture. Either way, once the ambergris is released into the ocean and floats on its surface, a long maturation process mediated by air, seawater and sunlight leads to the formation of small amounts of (–)-Ambrox. According to Jean-Paul Guerlain, ambergris lumps smell of 'rye bread and horse manure,' but tinctured in alcohol, ambergris releases a delicate, warm, soft, slightly saline scent. Its odorous principle, (–)-Ambrox, has an intense, warm and soft, persistent ambery odor with dry woody-tobacco, marine, animalic and velvety musky shades.

High amounts of (–)-Ambrox were for example used by Jacques Polge in 'Allure Homme Edition Blanche' (Chanel, 2008) in duel with 1% content of geranium oil, and 5% of (–)-Ambrox were incorporated by Laurent Bruyere and Dominique Ropion in 'Alien' (Thierry Mugler, 2005) juxtaposed with a Hedione-laden jasmine sambac accord. Pure (–)-Ambrox was featured by Geza Schön in 'molecule02' (escentrıc molecules, 2008) – well almost, as it is dipropylene glycol (DPG, 2) : (–)-Ambrox (1) : isopropyl myristate (IPM, 1), but DPG is odorless, and IPM is almost. As DPG and IPM work nicely as fixatives, 'molecule02' is the perfume of choice when it comes to scenting the (–)-Ambrox keychain, pendant, or bling.

In semi-precious and precious metal, (–)-Ambrox is indeed also a nice pendant for a necklace, and works well as a bling, too. The dimensions are ca. 4.1 cm × 3.7 cm × 2.0 cm, and the hole for the key ring or chain (not included) has a diameter of ca. 4.0 mm.
