Product Description
Amphistium is a fossil fish that lived 50 million years ago. It demonstrates the evolution from symmetrical eye placement on fish to the asymmetrical eye placement of flatfish like halibut. Flatfish who scud along the ocean floor don't need eyes facing the ocean bed, and therefore have evolved to have two eyes facing upward on one side of their body. Amphistium is an intermediate stage in which one eye has begun to migrate up the head to cross over to the other side of the body. Amphistium is considered a transitional fossil in evolution (M. Friedman, Nature 2008 Jul 10;454(7201):209-12).
