The colonial green alga, Pediastrum, is the inspiration for this pendant. Pediastrum is a freshwater colonial alga that forms an orderly geometric structure with 4 to164 cells. If the colony contains 16 or more cells, it forms concentric rings, giving the algal colony a star-like appearance. As cells age, they acquire multiple nuclei, as can be clearly seen in each cell of the pendant design. Pediastrum is also a type of plankton because it is not independently motile and simply floats in the water.
