Product Description
This pendant is nspired by the benthic foraminifera Elphidium macellum. Foraminifera are amoeboid protists that live in the sediment of the ocean (benthic) or are free floating (planktonic). The name is derived from the latin for "hole bearer" because whereas they protect themselves by means of a calcium carbonate test, this test is adorned with elaborate holes so that the protist can stream ectoplasm out of the holes to catch prey and drag it inside the test to be digested. Elphidium macellum forms a particularly intricate and beautiful test, as shown in this pendant.
Pendant is 2.1 cm (0.8 inches) wide and 2.4 cm (0.9 inches) long below the loop. From the side, it is 8 mm (0.3 inches) wide in the thickest part.
