Q-14: "Big Apple Mermaid" by Naomi Fisher
Born and raised in Miami, I have strong ties to the sea and to mythologies of women represented in oceanic folklore. For the past five years, I have primarily been creating large scale public art projects that distill natural forms into timeless universal archetypes. Most recently, I finished a block-wide development’s six-story building facade, reinterpreting palm fronds and trunks into a geometric frieze and an intricate terrazzo floor with brass and aluminum details. The design was inspired by Art Deco and Egyptian iconography, two hieroglyphic histories that have informed my work for the last decade. This process of distilling motifs into new universal icons is at the center of my practice.
To re-envision the image of Q-14 (which includes Rockaway Beach), I took the opportunity to create my own mermaid tale through a distinctly feminist lens. The designs incorporate tongue-in-cheek references to mermaid cliches, embodying the experience of city life so close to the ocean.
In Big Apple Mermaid, she is regally perched atop New York’s most iconic symbol, while holding a smaller apple in hand, like Eve before being banished from Eden. Trash Can Mermaid represents the material waste of late capitalism. Attempting to present ourselves through the veneer of commodity while barely making it in tiny homes, keeping energy and spirits high with nourishment from the big apple in one hand and a bottle of beer in the other.
