About the movie:
It's 2274 and on the surface, it all seems to be an idyllic society. Living in a city within an enclosed dome, there is little or no work for humans to perform and inhabitants are free to pursue all of the pleasures of life. There is one catch however: your life is limited and when you reach 30, it is terminated in a quasi-religious ceremony known as Carousel. Some, known as runners, do try to escape their fate when the time comes and it's the job of Sandmen to track them down and kill them. Logan is such a man and with several years before his own termination date, thinks nothing of the job he does. Soon after meeting a young woman, Jessica-6, he is ordered to become a runner himself and infiltrate a community outside the dome known as Sanctuary and to destroy it. Pursued by his friend Francis, also a Sandman, Logan and Jessica find their way to the outside. There they discover a beautiful, virtually uninhabited world. Logan realizes that he must return to the dome to tell them what he's found and be set free.

Film Version
The Sandman Gun (also known as the Deep Sleep Gun) has no variable ammunition options, but benefits from having the much larger ammunition capacity of 120 rounds or firings (good for approximately six weeks of normal Deep Sleep Operative use). Instead of firing solid projectiles, the gun shoots charged particles of variable intensity. A single well placed shot is enough to kill a human or destroy certain obstacles.
The gun's body is made up of teflon-plated tempered durasteel. The range of the Sandman Gun is approximately 360 feet, and has an average recharge time of three hours.
TV Series Version
In the television series The flameguns were called "weapons" and had three settings: Stun, Blast, and Kill. Settings were changed by turning the back of the barrel. The reason was a 'family values' issue at CBS. Logan's Run was a 'family' show thus the word "Gun" had certain connotations and could not be used.
About the trackers:
In the film, Logan's Run, only a few special props were ever seen being carried by the "Sandmen" – the famous D.S. (for ‘Deep Sleep’) Pistol, the gas pellets on their belts (those silver dowel looking things), and the multi-purpose “Follower.” The Follower was a combination tool: a communicator, with both audio and video (via the faux view screen), a tracking device designed to lock onto a Runner’s blinking “life clock” crystal, and a mundane but utilitarian flash light. While it may have performed other important Utopian police gadget functions, these were the only attributes of the device revealed within the film.
