Product Description
USS Roanoke was a screw steam frigate of the US Navy, launched in 1855, and participating in the American Civil War as flagship of the Home Squadron. After the battle of Hampton Roads in March 1862, it was decided to convert the ship into a multi-turreted ironclad; she is more properly referred to as an ironclad ram rather than a multi-turreted monitor, as the definition of the latter specifies a type of ship 'originally designed for use in shallow harbours and rivers', but the ship still has a very deep draught of more than 7mt, making for her if not impossible, at least very difficult operating in shallow riverine and coastal waters (the same problem that plagued the similarly converted CSS Virginia).
Conversion work was completed in 1863, and the ship was rearmed with three Ericsson-type turrets, with two 15in Dahlgrens, two 150pdr Parrot rifles, and two 11in Dahlgren guns. Armour was 11in on the turrets and 9in for the pilot houses on top of the first two, and between 3.5-4.5in on the rest of the ship, with a 1.5in deck.
Roanoke did not see much action if at all during the rest of the war, and in June 1865 was decommissioned. Returned to service in 1874, she was now thoroughly obsolete, therefore it was put in reserve once again the following year, finally being scrapped in 1883.
USS Keokuk was an experimental ironclad ram completed in early 1863, with the unique feature of being able to flood her forward and stern compartments to raise or lower the overall silouhette of the ship at the waterline, to reduce her profile in combat. The two fixed turret-like casemates were fixed in place and housed an 11in Dahlgren gun in each.
At the first battle of Charleston in April 1863, Keokuk, along with the flotilla to which she was attached (USS New Ironsides plus seven monitors), attacked the Confederate stronghold, but soon USS Nahant (Passaic class monitor) was damaged and momentarily lost control due to her helsman being killed, and Keokuk ran aground while trying to avoid her. She was pounded for half an hour by Confederate gunfire, but she was able to withdraw under her own power. However, the enemy gunnery had taken its toll: having being kept afloat by her crew throughout the night, as the morning wind rose Keokuk started to ship water rapidly, and soon foundered close to Morris Island.
