Focus Gear for Nikkor 28mm f/2 - PART A

Cine focus gear ring for Nikon Nikkor 28mm f/2.

This fits the Pre-/Non-AI version of this lens with the new style rubber grip, sometimes known as New Nikkor or K lenses. The rubber grip has three rows. More info.

Low Profile—The rubber grip must be removed, as this gear ring replaces it. It can be gently stretched off by slipping a smooth tool under it. This can be done without damaging the lens, and is easily reversible.

Standard cine follow focus gear: module 0.8, 20-degree pressure angle; 87 tooth.

Installation Instructions

1. Remove rubber grip.
2. Cut open the inner sleeve (part B) with a razor blade in one of the thin sections.
3. Place the lens on a work surface with the front element facing up (and a cap over the glass)
4. Place inner sleeve (part B) around the focus barrel in the groove from which you removed the grip with the narrow end of keys facing up.
5. While pinching together the inner sleeve so the cut edges meet up, test fit the outer gear ring around the inner ring (with the large end of the slots facing down). The fit should be very tight. Don't force it down too far.
6. Boil a dish of water and place the gear ring in it for two minutes.
7. Remove the gear ring from the water and dry it off with a lint-free cloth (it may transfer dye depending on the material). You want it to remain hot during the next step, so do this quickly but carefully!
8. Again, pinch the inner sleeve tight around the lens and slip the gear ring around it (this may take some force). Make sure to align it flush on the top and bottom with the inner sleeve before it cools.
