This is one component of a two part kit designed to convert the 3500g tender as fitted to either the Hornby 00 GWR 28XX or 2884 Class 2-8-0. Please note that this will not fit the 3500g tender without removable coal or tender driven models.
Please note: If you are purchasing the cab shutters for the GWR Collet 2884 Class 2-8-0 (see GWR Cab Shutters & Feed Pipe for Oil Fired 2884) you will not need this component since a feed pipe is included with the shutters.
History:
In Britain, between 1945 & 1947 coal was in short supply. With the Railways probably being the largest users in the country, the government encouraged them to conver some of their locomotives to burn oil. A short video on the subject can be found here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qISLfouQJIw.
During this time the locos were renumbered into the 48XX series as follows:
Churchward 28XX
2832 - 4806, 2834 - 4804, 2839 - 4808, 2845 - 4809, 2847- 4811, 2848 - 4807,
2849 - 4803, 2853 - 4810, 2854 - 4801, 2862 - 4802, 2863 - 4805, 2872 - 4800.
Collett 2884
2888 - 4850, 3813 - 4855, 3818 - 4852, 3820 - 4856, 3831 - 4857, 3837 - 4854,
3839 - 4853, 3865 - 4851.
Instructions:
To convert the tender you will need two parts, this and my
GWR 28XX & 2884 Tank for Oil Burning Tender.
Please remember to order this at the same time as the pipe so as to save on postage! The shorter end of the feed pipe locates in the round hole towards the back of the tank so that the longer end rests on the top of the tender nect to the large dome. The pipe's short end and the hole in which it is fitted has a square end to help ensure the pipe aligns correctly (see photo of finished tender.
This pipe should be glued in place using a small drop of superglue. It may also be necessary to file a little off the longer end of the pipe to ensure that the pipe just touches the tender top and does not lift the end of the tank.
