Product Description
The Lyon class were a series of four battleships designed by the Marine Nationale (French Navy) in 1913, scheduled to begin construction in 1915. The outbreak of the Great War the previous year put a stop to the construction of the previous class, the Normandie class, and the Lyons were never started.
Two final design variants were proposed, one with the main turrets arranged two superfiring forward, two superfiring aft, while the more traditional design had only the rear turrets superfiring, while the forward turret at deck level was moved amidships. The design was never finalized, therefore it cannot be established which of the two designs the Marine Nationale would have chosen in the end.
Four ships of the class were planned: Lyon, Lille, Duquesne, Tourville; all to be armed with four quadruple turrets with 340mm guns, the same turrets used on the previous Normandie class, which only had 3. With only a very limiting speed of 21kn, and very little room for improvement in the design, construction of both Normandie and Lyon class battleships was not resumed after 1918.
