This is an inverse stellation of a rhombic dodecahedron which is the most complex parallelohedra that has identical faces. Similar to two dimensional tessellating shapes, this three dimensional solid can interlock with itself like a repeating puzzle.
I had always had a fascination with fractals but last year when I read that a new two-dimensional tessellating shape was discovered I got really interested in the finite shapes that can fill infinite space.
It's as appealing mathmatically as it is aesthetically!
The loop for the earwire is 1.3mm thick. The minimum thickness for unsupported wires and embossed features for both metals and plastics is 1mm or less so this model should print strong in any material you choose.
In the polished metallic plastic, a single earring weighs 5 grams meaning it's quite light for it's size and doesn't hang heavily on your ear.
I designed this to be hollow internally both for looks and so that it would print better. You can see in the photo of the polished metallic plastic earring pictured that the external surfaces are shiny both because of the nature of the material as well as due to the polishing process. The internal surfaces are unpolished but the difference in texture is not visible unless you are looking at the earring from a few inches away.
Most materials will ship in approximately 1-2 weeks. If you need these ASAP order unpolished white plastic using Shapeways rush processing.
