Product Description
This is a Seax.

The original was made of Iron. I am unaware of the circumstances of its finding, but the shape dates it to the latest years of the ninth centruy to well into the Eleventh centuries AD. With it's swept forward point and pronounced "Broken back", it is most certainly of the III/II type. Despite what many modern smiths will tell you, The distinctive knife of the Saxons was not a mere sharped bar with a corner cut off - the Seax was far, FAR more developed than that. It is currently held by the Castle Museum in Norwich and can normally be viewed in their most excellent Viking and Saxon exhibit.

Nothing survives of the Handle - but it can be be assumed to have been of Bone or Antler - or Far more likely, Ox Horn or Wood and would have likely been long. For an Example of a similar seax with a surviving handle, search google for the "Aachen Seax" or "The Hunting Knife of Charlamagne"

The Replica is near enough 1:1 and is designed as an aid for Blacksmiths wishing to produce replicas.

I have not yet received my copy of this and so I cannot vouch for its quality or suitability for purpose - but I will update this description when I have confirmed all is right and well.

I Have only made it available in a Basic plastic as it is not a functional item and is designed to be used as a 3D guide on making replicas.

I Am unaware of any Bibliography for this item. If you know of anything, Please Contact me!
