Product Description
Ordered as war builds orders A (first batch) and G (second batch), the U-57 class submarines (U-Boot in German is the short of UnterSeeBoot, literally submersible) were built by AG Weser between 1914-16 (1 group) and 1916-17 (2 group).
The first batch consisted of boats U-57 to U-62, while the second from U-99 to U-104. There were slight differences between them, the second group being 0.6 mt longer than the original design but slightly lighter, having about 10 cm less draught. All units in the class were equipped with 500 mm torpedo tubes (two forward-firing and two rear), and two 8.8 cm quick-firing deck guns, except for U-61 and 62, and U-99 and 100, which were only fitted with a single 10.5 cm L-45 cannon. During 1916-17, the 8.8 cm weapons would be removed and a 10.5 cm one installed on U-57 to U-60. U-100, already having the larger gun installed, was additionally equipped with one 8.8 cm, while U-101 to U-104 dropped only one such weapon instead of both in exchange for the 10.5 cm.
Of the twelve units, 7 would be lost during the war. Notably U-99 was torpedoed by another submarine, while U-103 was rammed and sunk by former RMS (now HMTS, denoting the troop transport role) Olympic.
Of the five remaning units, four went to the UK and the other to France after the Armistice; all were sold and broken up between 1919 and 1921.
