This is a miniature of a closed wooden barrel with metal straps (13" high x 10" dia.).
This size normally carried liquids (such as wine) or black powder.
If a barrel was to carry black powder, the metal rings would be made of copper. Copper does not create a spark when in contact with metals so was a safe metal to use near black powder.
