Product Description
CSS Alabama was a Confederate commerce raider built in 1862 in the UK.
The ship was built similar to a screw sloop-of-war of the time, but with an emphasis on speed and endurance at the cost of a reduced armament. Armed with six 32pdr guns, a single 68pdr and a massive pivot 110pdr cannons, the ship wreaked havoc on Union shipping lanes throughout the Eastern Atlantic, the Gulf of Mexico, the South African coast, the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific, ending up in Cherbourg, France, in June 1864. The ship was in dire need of repairs and refurbishment, but while awaiting in port, the sloop-of-war USS Kearsarge showed up outside of the harbour. The captain of the Alabama issued a challenge to its counterpart on the Union warship, and the two vessels fought each other on the 19 June, ending with Alabama's sinking.
Some parts of the ship, mainly gun barrels, have been recovered by the French in the XXth century and are either undergoing conservation or are now on display.
