Product Description
This is the plastic latch that you press on a Smart ForTwo Cabrio to activate the switch that opens the tailgate. On my 2009 vintage Smart convertible, and others I've looked at, the corners of the original part tend to break off. It eventually falls off the car, and you can no longer open the tailgate. This part replaces the original and attempts to be more robust. The dealer wanted $200 for parts and labor to replace entire tailgate latch mechanism. I lived with duct tape until I made this part. This part can be tricky to install -- you might need to practice with the old part first, if you still have it. The key seems to be to get the tab as low in the rectangular hole as you can -- too high and you end up on the wrong side of the mechanism. You'll need to bend this part to install it -- it's strong and flexible so it'll take it. I've had one of these on my car for five years -- as long as the original!
