This image was created for the book Unlocking the Secrets of Eosinophilic Esophagitis (available at bit.ly/UNLOCKEOE). In a healthy esophagus, the helper T cells call for help when there is an intruder, and eosinophil warriors arrive to throw protease bombs to destroy the intruder.
The eosinophil is a white blood cell warrior that fights parasites or allergens. When called, these warriors set off protease bombs to help destroy the invaders. In the esophagus of a person who has Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) helper T cells are confused, and they call too many eosinophil warriors to come to fight. The warriors become monsters setting off too many protease bombs. The excess proteases destroy proteins and tissues. It’s a minefield that causes the pain and discomfort inside the throat of a person with EoE.
Research is underway to keep the needed Eosinophil Warrior from becoming a monster. Buy your own copy of the warrior to wear as a pendant or a keychain. Buy the book to help support EoE research.
