The underworld in Aztec mythology was known as Mictlan and it was ruled by the god of death Mictlantecuhtli. The way to the underworld was filled with meny perils for the recent deceased. For Measoamerican civilizations, death was a natural extension of existance that wasn't feared but celebrated.
