A space frame (support structure made of triangular trusses) is curved into a geodesic (curved surface like a dome comprised of triangle panels) sphere. This forms an area between the inside and outside. Buckminster Fuller thought of floating cities, called Cloud 9, that are large ball shapes that people live on the surface
