Product Description
This sculpture is intended to be spun while iluminated by a strobe light flashing at just the right frequency.
It will then show a cylider with a whirling vortex on top. On the side walls are ascending pegs from which falling balls bounce off.

The video below shows a computer simulation of what it will look like.

The trick is that the angle through which the sculpture rotates between frames is the Golden angle. This is an idea by John Edmark: He took a sequence of shape elements, each rotated with respect to the previous one through the Golden angle about a common axis and also moving in the radial/axial plane, while possibly changing form. So after a rotation through the Golden angle, each element is replaced by its successor in the sequence, yielding an animation. This specific angle has the property of producing evenly spaced arrangements of elements because it is based on φ, the most irrational number.

This design develps two ideas introduced with these 2 products further:
1. Where the ocean zoetrope had waves on a cylinder wall, that is at constant radius, this one has a disk-shaped wave surface.
The vortex is a superposition of periodic waves which have different periods and therefore different apparent drift speeds.
To make a uniform looking wave surface, I modulated the amplitude depending on the drift speed (which changes with the distance from the center), so that basically, waves within the right speed interval are amplified and others suppressed. Because this breaks down in the center (there are simply no suitable drift speeds available), I got the idea of deforming the surface into a vortex to hide the flat spot.
Then I shifted the center of the drift speed interval, depending on the distance to the center, so that the vortex would rotate.
Superposed on that are the radially infalling spiral waves which are made of Gabor-patches that move inward or outward at random speeds in ordinary Bloom-manner. Their amplitude also depends on where their speed is in a prescribed interval in order to achieve a preferred average velocity for the wave pattern.
2. Elements interacting with each other. The balls on the side walls bounce off the ascending pegs, but not off each other. Instead they penetrate each other. To compute this motion, first the pegs are placed, with a golden angle between sucessive pegs. Then a ball is simulated dropping down and bouncing off the pegs. Additionally, between frames the ball is moved sideways by a golden fraction of the cylinder's circumference. This simulation yields the positions for all the balls. It took a while to find parameters yielding a nice result.
