Product Description
Project Weser was the name given to the carrier conversion for the cruiser Seydlitz, lead ship of the last group of two vessels of the Admiral Hipper class heavy cruisers.
Built to a slightly revised design compared to Hipper itself and the group Blucher-Prinz Eugen, there were thoughts of converting Seydlitz and Lutzow to a modified armament with twelve 15cm guns in triple turrets, but eventually were almost completed as heavy cruisers by 1940; both were launched but work was stopped. Lutzow was sold to the Soviet Union and renamed Petropavlovsk, although she is more commonly known by her Soviet never-completed conversion of Tallinn, which would have provided the ship with four triple 180mm turrets.
Seydlitz herself was never to be completed as a cruiser. Reflecting on the loss of Bismarck and the Japanese carriers' successes in the Pacific, in August 1942 the 95% complete ship was ordered to be cut down and converted into a light aircraft carrier, with a projected air complement of 10 Bf-109s and 8 Ju-87s. Work was again suspended in mid-1943 and from April 1944 the hull was used as a hulk. In early 1945 Seydlitz was scuttled, and salvaged and scrapped by the Soviets after the war.
