Product Description
The Pennsylvania class were two superdreadnoughts of the US Navy, both launched in 1915 and commissioned the following year. Following the line established by the previous two-ship Nevada class, the Pennsylvanias expanded on the armament (twelve 14in guns as opposed to ten), but apart from that, the ships were very similar to their predecessors.
Upon completion, USS Pennsylvania (BB-38) was made flagship of the Atlantic Fleet. She spent WWI and the early inter-war years in training and gunnery exercises, and underwent several upgrades. In 1925 the ship visited Australia. Pennsylvania had a number of small refits throughout the late 1920s, until 1929, when she was put in for a major modernization. In the 1930s the battleship was transferred to the Pacific station to participate in the Fleet Problems. The start of the war in the Pacific found her in a drydock in Pearl Harbour, behind the two destroyers Cassin and Downes, which were heavily damaged in the attack and settled on the bottom. Pennsylvania itself was only hit once by a bomb, however fires from the two sinking destroyers in front of her managed to spread, but were eventually brought under control. She was then transferred to California, and in early 1942 underwent major reconstruction, before joining the fleet for the Aleutians campaign in 1943, and then participating as a shore bombardment vessel in the Marshalls, Marianas and Philippines campaigns. On the night of 24 October Pennsylvania, along with other five modernized battleships, destroyed the task group composed by the old superdreadnoughts Fuso and Yamashiro, the heavy cruiser Mogami, and four destroyers. In August 1945, she was the last major US warship to be damaged in the war, when a torpedo bomber managed to put its ordnance towards the stern of the vessel.
The battleship was later expended in Operation Crossroads tests.
