Product Description
The Super Alsace design is a hypothetical battleship that could have been designed in 1940-41 as the war escalated had France not fallen in 1940.
Given the rapid escalation and the need of the French Navy for the biggest number of modern battleships to pit against Italy's and Germany's new construction, three variant of the Alsace class design were prepared in late 1939. Two ships were authorized on 1 April the following year, but these would never materialize due to the aforementioned German invasion, while two more were considered to be built at a later date, but never officially confirmed.
However there is proof of the existence of a 431 mm/50 naval gun being tested by 1940, which sadly resides in private archives at the time of writing and the only known information is that blueprints were prepared, the calibre and length of the gun (in calibres). Possibly even a prototype was produced, but this is speculation until and if the relevant papers are ever published.
The Super Alsace is meant to represent a hypothetical version of the two unauthorized ships, if they were upscaled and armed with such a weapon, to try to keep pace with the other naval powers' designs of the time: assuming a hypothetical timeline, the vessels would have been laid down in early 1941, and enter service some time in 1944, in a world where the Yamato and Iowa classes are the new battleship standard (notwithstanding German and Italian responses to these ships had the war gone in a different way).
The design itself has been modelled in SpringSharp and is different yet still the same from earlier French ships: three quadruple turrets with 431 mm/50 guns are distributed two at the bow and one at the stern, on a 74,000 ton hull capable of 32 kn, carrying the same armour scheme as Alsace with a 350 mm belt and 170 mm deck; a secondary battery of nine 152 mm triple turrets, as in all previous designs from Richelieu onwards; eight twin 100 mm enclosed mounts and six quadruple 37 mm AA mounts rounded up the armament. Changes would have been made in the latter category had the ships ever been constructed and entered service late in the war or early post war, with more modern weapons and directors, radars and comms systems.
