Product Description
H. L. Hunley, sometimes referred to as CSS Hunley, is a submersible built in Mobile, Alabama, in 1863. She was named after her inventor, shortly after being transferred to the Confederate Army for service, and was the first successfull submarine to sink an enemy warship in action. Her entire crew was lost thrice during her career, twice to accidents and the third time after sinking USS Housatonic, and the causes of her ultimate loss have never been pinned down clearly. In all, 21 crewmen, including her creator Horace Hunley, died on board, although twice the boat was returned to service; for this reason alone, Hunley holds the not-so-enviable record of being the only ship to have a 1:3 kill-to-death ratio. The submersible was recovered in 2000 and is now displayed in North Charleston, South Carolina, where it is undergoing conservation and study.
