Product Description
USS Carronade (IFS-1) was an American support vessel for amphibious landing operations, the first of the Inshore Fire Support Ships (IFS). Her name was aptly given in view of her armament: a single 5''/38 dual-purpose gun with roughly a 180° fire arc forward, two twin 40 mm Bofors guns, and eight Mk 105 twin rocket launchers firing over the bow; the latter were capable of firing up to thirty rockets per minute. She was essentially a development of the LSM(R) (Landing Ship Medium (Rocket)).
Completed in mid-1955, Carronade carried out extensive trials both to prove the concept of the IFS and to iron out any problems that might have been found. She made a number of cruises in the Pacific area before being put in the reserve in mid-1960. Re-entering service in 1965, she served as the flagship of Inshore Fire Support Division 93, although she was again quickly decommissioned in July 1970. Before that all ships in her Division had their hull designation changed to LFR. Carronade was sold for scrap in 1974.
