Product Description
Ordered as the 1942 Design Light Fleet Carrier, the Colossus class were the first eight units of the sixteen ordered (the others will eventually be two aircraft support ships and the rest the modified Majestic class).
Only four would be completed before the end of WWII, which were subsequently sold to other countries following the drastic reduction of the Royal Navy's size in the late 1940s.
Colossus was sold in 1946 to the French Navy and remained in service until 1974; it was scrapped four years later.
HMS Venerable was sold in 1947 to the Netherlands and renamed Karel Doorman, remaining in Dutch service for 20 years until sold again to the Argentine Navy as Veinticinco de Mayo; she was not decommissioned until 1999 and scrapped the same year.
Vengeance was transferred to the Royal Australian Navy between 1952 and 1955, being then sold to Brazil as Minas Geraes and finally scrapped in 2004.
Warrior was loaned to the Royal Canadian Navy between 1946 and 1948, then returned to Britain and sold to Argentina in 1958 under the name Independencia; she was scrapped there in 1971.
Glory, Ocean, Theseus and Triumph (the former two completed early in 1945 and the latter in 1946) served in the Royal Navy until the late 1950s, but their small size prevented significant upgrades to be installed; therefore all were sold for scrap except for Triumph, which was converted into a repair ship in 1965, serving until 1981.
HMS Pioneer and Perseus were built to the original Colossus design but were both completed as aircraft maintenance ships. Both were scrapped with their sisters in the late 1950s.
