Product Description
RMS Carpathia was an ocean liner ordered by the Cunard company in 1900, not as one of the top competitors for speed or luxury on the North Atlantic route, but still be relevant enough to operate on the profitable immigrant route towards the United States.
She was a modified Ivernia class liner, the two ships of this class being ordered at the same time as Carpathia; the latter was laid down in England in 1901 and entered service in mid 1903. She earned a reputation for being a comfortable ship, not prone to much rolling thanks to the not very high length to beam ration and the use of bilge keels.
The high point in her career came in April 1912, when she came to the aid of RMS Titanic's survivors as soon as the distress call was heard. Unfortunately she was not fast enough to make it in time before the new liner went down, but the prompt action of her captain and crew helped saving the majority of the survivors. When Carpathia made in New York five days later she was escorted by the scout cruiser USS Chester.
The ship served through the entirety of the Great War, operating as a troop ship, sometimes alone, sometimes in convoy, until July 1918 when she was spotted by a German submarine in the Southwest Approaches, the stretch of water separating Great Britain from Ireland. Under war regulations Carpathia was zig-zagging, but this did not prevent her from being hit by two torpedoes and sinking in about two hours.
The wreck was discovered in 2000, after a claim the year before proving to be a different liner, lying in 150 mt of water.
