Product Description
USS Ticonderoga (CV-14) was one of 24 Essex class fleet carriers built by the US Navy during and immediately after WWII. The ship entered service in May 1944, joining TF 38 in the Pacific Theatre, providing air cover during the battle of Leyte, where she was hit by a Tokko aircraft. On 22 November, her pilots sank heavy cruiser Kumano, which had previously lost her bow in the battle of Samar; the carrier group came under attack later in the day but Ticonderoga escaped damage.
The ship participated in the Luzon and South China Sea campaigns, before being struck again by another Tokko aircraft in January 1945, listing 10° port; her air group transferred to her sister Hancock, she made for Puget Sound for repairs, coming out again in April.
She could then strike targets during the Okinawa campaign and other active operations; present at the signing of the Japanese surrender, she made various Magic Carpet journeys, only to be placed in reserve in 1947.
In 1952 the carrier was put back into service and thoroughly modernized following SCB-27C reconstruction to operate jet aircraft, only yo be drydocked again shortly for SCB-125 modernization. Ticonderoga was redeployed from 1958 until being involved in the Gulf of Tonkin incident, and contributing air strikes in Vietnam between 1965 and 1969.
That year Ticonderoga was converted and reclassified as CVS (anti-submarine warfare carrier) and remaining in service as such until retired in 1973, with a brief interlude that same year for the recovery of Apollo 17 astronauts, sold in 1975 and scrapped.
