The Tech Behind This Product
This mezmorizing fidget is based on a patented design demonstrating a new method to create mechanical motions without joints called Elastic Design. This is a design practice used by an Ann Arbor, MI based aerospace company FlexSys, (flxsys.com) and it is the approach used to design the shape changing airplane wings on a jet being flown by NASA!
Elastic design distributes stresses over the entire part and allows us to exploit elasticity of strong materials like hard plastics, metals and composites without breaking. These strong yet flexible designs allow a device to store energy, and then release it like a spring.
Now mechanisms can be made as one part with no separate joints, hinges, or springs. FlexSys calls this Flex-to-Function and it can even be applied at the micro scale where assembly would otherwise be impossible.
