Product Description
USS Wasp (CV-18) was one of 24 Essex class fleet carriers built by the US Navy during and immediately after WWII. The ship entered service in November 1943, joining TF 58 in the Pacific for the Marshall and Mariana Islands, the Philippines, Saipan, Iwo Jima and Okinawa campaigns; at the battle of the Philippine Sea her aircraft sank the carrier Hiyo and hit Zuikaku, Ryuho and Zuiho, while at Leyte Gulf aircraft from the task force sank the light cruiser Noshiro and damaged heavy cruiser Kumano, which was later sunk by USS Ticonderoga.
At the end of August 1945, Wasp was damaged in a typhoon and spent a couple of months in repair, being then enlisted for Operation Magic Carpet and then taken out of active service in 1947. The following year the carrier was drydocked for SCB-27A modernization and recommissioned in 1951.
In April 1952 Wasp collided with a destroyer minesweeper but sustained no heavy damage, relieving her sister Tarawa in the Mediterranean after repairs in June. In 1953 the carrier went on a world cruise that lasted until 1954, when deployed in Japan; in 1955 she was put in San Francisco yards for SCB-125 modernization and reclassified as CVS (anti-submarine warfare carrier) in 1956.
Wasp spent the next fifteen or so years in exercises and training, being used as a support asset and 'showing the flag' around the world; in 1972 she was finally put out of service, and sold for scrap the next year.
