Large, decorative C clef pendant with deeply engraved letter "C".

A clef is a musical symbol used to indicate the pitch of written notes. The C clef or alto respectively tenor clef is used for the viola but also for other instruments like alto trombone, violoncello or bass viol and when deep strings and blowers play extremely high pitched tones.

The clef is placed at the beginning of the stave in such a way that the line with the F note passes through its centre and in this design also through the "C" visible in the left beam.
