Product Description
Battle cruiser SMS Hindenburg was to be the third ship of the Derfflinger class, ordered as Ersatz Hertha (replacement ship for the old protected cruiser Hertha), however it was completed to a slightly modified design; much what the Queen Mary is to the Lion class, Hindenburg is to the Derfflingers.
Launched in August 1915 and completed in May 1917, she missed the battle of Jutland where her half-sister Lutzow was sunk, and she was too late to take part in any considerable naval action of the Great War, also being the last battle cruiser completed for the Kaiserliche Marine.
On 23 November Hindenburg replaced Seydlitz as flagship of I Scouting Group, the battle cruiser squadron of the High Seas Fleet; she took part in fleet advances in early 1918, but as the war turned against the Germans a last sortie for the battle fleet was being contemplated.
However, as the order to set sail was given in late October, the sailors mutiny and the fleet remains at anchor. Hindenburg was later internet in Scapa Flow and scuttled on 21 June 1919, to prevent it from becoming a war prize. Four times salvage operations were undertaken, and yet it was only in 1930 that the ship was refloated and towed to Rosyth for scrapping.
