Product Description
In the late decades of the XIX century the three major countries of South America - Brazil, Argentina and Chile - had started a naval arms race financed by their massive export markets. However, none of the countries had the infrastructure to build battleships, so they had to be ordered abroad; but while all of them were in the midst of the important business of building a  navy, HMS Dreadnought was launched in 1906. Therefore everyone decided the ships under construction were inadequate for the new generation of naval warfare and so were reordered in dreadnought form. Brazil ordered their two Minas Geraes class units from British yards as early as 1907, and Argentina felt forced to respond.
They decided to inquire yards of the major naval powers (among them, the UK, USA, Germany, Italy and France) about design bids for a dreadnought of their own, although in a cunning political move the Argentinians rejected all the bids, twice, before ordering what would become the Rivadavia class from a US yard (which was naturally the lowest bidder of the lot).
Among the Rivadavia preliminary designs drawn up by various foreign yards, the Italian Ansaldo '1908 design project for a 20,000 ton battleship' is one of the most curious and advanced to be considered for the time.
Dimensions are somewhat debated since the only existing picture of the design is damaged and blurred, but a length of roughly 170 mt by 24 mt beam seem to fit the drawings. The appearance was striking, with a raised short forecastle with a main turret at its rear, and a casemate gun position above the anchors on each side; two more en echelon turrets at deck level were present amidships, and two more at the stern; however the latter had their barbettes raised one deck higher, the rearmost one because of another casemate gun position, which the forwardmost to have clear arcs of fire over the en echelon firing turrets. It also had a unique twin mast design and three funnels dotted the entire length of the deck.
The most important aspect of the entire design was the main armament. Having already illustrated its peculiar layout, it would surprise absolutely nobody to hear the main guns were 305 mm in calibre, but all of them were fitted in triple turrets. This would have given a comfortable broadside of 12 guns and possibly 15 at some angles, with potential end-on fire being from 6 to 9 barrels. Secondary guns were 120 mm in calibre, all fitted in casemates. Underwater torpedo tubes were fitted on the sides.
Speed was relatively good at 22 knots, given the large percentage of displacement taken up by the armament. Armour thicknesses are unreadable but a 200-250 mm belt is admissible.
