Product Description
This is a 00 Scale model of the LNWR Crampton locomotive ‘Liverpool’ – in her day claimed to be the most powerful engine in the world. Britain’s only 6-2-0, built in 1848 as an answer to record-breaking GWR broad gauge engines, she was exhibited at the famous 1851 ‘Great Exhibition’ (winning a medal) but owing to reported track damage was largely in storage at Camden until ‘rebuilt’ into a more standard 0-6-0 at Wolverton in 1859. Nonetheless it was a notable step in locomotive development and the largest of the once-popular Crampton type of design.
This model originated as a jumbo-ised N Gauge engine, suitably altered to 00 tolerances and to fit proprietary parts, enabling as simple construction as possible. Combined with the 00 Crampton Motion Pack and Crampton Tender (both separately available) these provide the primary parts for a fully working model (motorised tender chassis to be developed by the builder).
IMPORTANT: while most models available here have been pre-tested and known to work, this scratch-aid has not been printed/tested by myself, so while the measurements appear correct it is considered strictly experimental.
(Note: various materials are provided, however, WSF and BSF will require more preparation for smooth painting that FUD and FED.)
The following additional parts need to be sourced separately to complete:
3D-printed driving wheels and motion pack (separately available)
Leading wheels – 17.5mm diameter (including flange; without c.16.5mm as per the Alan Gibson catalogue eg their code 4849)
Nickel steel strip (0.5mm x 2mm) – for slide bars (22mm length; advice on fitting can be found in the N Gauge video below)
Loco-tender coupling
Pins (for rod linkages; see video below)
Styrene strip – to retain wheels
Optional additional details to scratchbuild (at the builder's discretion):
Handrails and regulator rod (wire; locations pre-drilled)
Reverser lever (base pre-printed)
Reverser-eccentric connections (styrene strip)
