Penannular broaches were used to gather and restrain hair or cloaks by many ancient peoples, and are often associated with the Celtic peoples. The pin is pushed through or behind the item being pinned, the loop is folded down and then rotated once the pin slips though the slot in the ring.
This broach has a dulled point so that it can be safely used to restrain long hair, or it could be used to join loose cloak ends for a historical reproduction outfit or to join the loose ends of a sarong or similar wrap.
