VR N Scale Z/ZL Guard Wagon

The heritage of Z class guard wagons dates back to the earliest days of the Victorian Railways. Over time, the original D class guard wagons were rebuilt, reconfigured and recoded to Z class in 1910. These guard wagons in turn became one of the most iconic pieces of Victorian Railways rolling stock.

When diesel locomotives were introduced in the 1950s, these incorporated auto-couplers only. In order to ensure that older screw-coupled passenger stock could be hauled by auto-coupler diesel locomotives, several Z wagons were fitted with dual screw/auto couplers in 1954/1955. During this conversion process, Z wagons fitted with auto-couplers were marked with an 'A' in the diagonal corners. In 1956, these wagons were recoded to ZP.

From 1959, the Z guard wagons were gradually upgraded to incorporate a lengthened auto-coupler shank with larger draft gear for smoother travelling. These wagons were reclassified as ZL, the 'L' for long shank coupler.

This model consists of the Z/ZL class guard wagon body and fixed six-wheel under-carriage.
