Product Description
The Coccolithus pendant is based on the complicated structures of coccolithophores, specifically Coccolithus pelagicus. The shell of this unicellular phytoplankton is composed of interlocking plates, called coccoliths, composed of calcium carbonate. Coccolithophores are found in the sunlit top layer of the ocean and are one of the most abundant phytoplankton species in marine ecosystems. Because they emit oxygen to the atmosphere and are eaten by other ocean organisms, they are important to a healthy ocean ecosystem. As oceans become warmer and more acidic under climate change conditions, the calcium carbonate shells of phytoplankton like Coccolithus dissolve and their communities decrease in size.
