The Grossflugdeckkreuzer concept (not to be confused with the flugzeugkreuzer) emerged in 1942 following the need to provide air cover for Kriegsmarine operations and their use as large surface commerce raiders, even though the latter concept died to death with Bismarck the previous and Scharnhorst the following year.
Notwithstanding, a series of hybrid designs was drawn up for a 'large aviation cruiser', the four designs (the first was a proper carrier) of the A series, even though they were in all intents and purposes aviation battleships, ranging from 40,000 to 70,000 metric tons in displacement.
Design AIIa was a further development of AII, five metres longer, for a total of 250mt, that reduced the secondary battery from 16 to 12 15cm casemated guns (the same installed initially on the Graf Zeppelin class), for two triple 28cm turrets instead of a single quad forward. The rest of the armament was the same, with 16 10.5cm and 14 3.7cm twin mounts, but the addition of 20 quad 2cm anti-aircraft Flakvierling mounts, and 23 aircraft (one less than the previous design). Developing 210,000shp for a speed of 34kn, it would have been an extremely large and vulnerable target commerce raiding deep into the Atlantic, even with the cover of its own 23 aircraft, given the sheer number of carriers in service with the RN alone at that point.
Commerce raiding in large surface ships was proven not viable anymore already with the battle of the Falklands in WW1, and the outdated doctrine for this kind of Kriegsmarine operations really show the toll taken by the forced two-decade pause in the management of a large surface navy imposed by the restrictions of the Versailles Treaty.
