Product Description
The two Furutaka class heavy cruisers were the first ships of this type to be built by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN). Built in the mid 1920s, they were designed to outclass the USN Omaha class; originally armed with six 20cm (7.87in) guns in single mounts, they were refitted at the end of the 1930s and given three twin turrets with 20.3cm (8in) guns.
Both ships, Furutaka and Kako, were quite active in the war, participating at the battles of the Coral Sea, Savo Island, and Cape Esperance. Kako was sunk at Savo Island by three torpedoes fired by submarine S-44; Furutaka was destroyed at Cape Esperance when she was struck by a torpedo that started a fire, which subsequently ignited her own Type 93 'Long Lances', resulting in quite a large 'bang', and some additional fires which eventually sunk her.
Fun fact: the lowest level crew quarters were very close to the waterline, and the portholes tended to ship on water when riding at high speed. They were often mocked for it and referred to as 'Aquariums'. The lowest portholes were deleted the 1930s refit.
