Borrelia is one genus of the phylum Spirochaetes. Spirochetes are notable for their helical shapes and for having an internal flagellum that facilitates their movement. Many spirochete bacteria are known to cause human disease. The Borrelia burgdorferei spirochete causes Lyme disease, an infection spread by Ixodes ticks that can result in chronic, debilitating symptoms in humans.
