Single Coccolith Pendant - Marine Biology

The Single Coccolith pendant represents one plate, or coccolith, of the single-celled algae Coccolithus pelagicus. Coccolithophores are found in the sunlit top layer of the ocean and are one of the most abundant phytoplankton species in marine ecosystems. Because they emit oxygen to the atmosphere and are eaten by other ocean organisms, they are important to a healthy ocean ecosystem. As oceans become warmer and more acidic under climate change conditions, the calcium carbonate shells of phytoplankton like Coccolithus dissolve and their communities decrease in size.
