Product Description
The Ferrous and Alumen are twin classes designed by a consortium of materials suppliers and built by Armstrong Mitchell & Company to showcase the use of Aluminum as a structural and armor element. Both classes were designed in 1890, shortly after the introduction of the Hall-Héroult electrolytic process dropped the price of Aluminum. Both the Alumen and the Ferrous were of similar dimensions and had identical armament and features. The Alumen used Aluminum for its armor, frame, wings, and engines while the Ferrous used iron or steel. This allowed the Alumen to be much lighter and to fit higher powered engines. The Alumen could also use standard Aerolyth panels, while the Ferrous had to use non-standard (8% thicker) panels. The major downside was cost. The Alumen was roughly twice the cost of the Ferrous, making it too expensive for most potential purchasers.
