With the Clemenceau class (R98) soon to enter service in 1950s, the French had began working on a larger carrier to perform nuclear strike missions. The project was authorized in 1958, but soon cancelled due to funding constraints in 1961.
France's indigenous carrier project since Clemenceau only continued with the Charles de Gaulle.
